ATLAS OBSCURA: THE WORLD’S MOST ADVENTUROUS KID – by Dylan Thuras and Rosemary Mosco

This books transports the reader around the world to dozens of amazing locations. Most were totally unknown to me, but are fascinating. Your young explorer can discover giant crystals in Mexico, a superconducting super collider in Texas or caves filled with glowworms in New Zealand, just to name a few of the adventures in the atlas. I especially liked the inclusion of a description of each country, which includes the location in the world, the culture, a local food, an obscure fact, and the latitude and longitude, as well as the featured country on the world globe. It also includes a tip for even more adventures as you leave the country for your next destination.
The back matter offers even more possibilities for exploration, and a bibliography of titles for those young explorers who want to see more of the world. I especially liked the page of explorer tips and the comparison of travel speeds (who knew the top speed of a Bactrian Camel is 25 MPH??).
If you know someone fascinated by the world, maps or exploring, this is the perfect book. It would be great as a surprise gift before a road trip or even on a flight. These fascinating facts will keep the reader (and mom and dad) absorbed for hours. This is a great addition to a library, as well. I think I’d definitely keep a copy in the library browsing bin for those times when kids just want to relax and learn something amazing.

Alma is lonely because her mother has been away in Iraq for months. Lulu the dog is living on the street when she gets scooped up by the Operation Rescue Dog truck. In this lyrical new picture book, these two sensitive souls overcome unexpected obstacles on the journey find their way together. A sweet book for dog-lovers with diverse characters.
