Where is Alcatraz? by Nico Medina; illustrated by David Groff
We LOVE the Who Is series, but the Where Is series has us super excited, too! Since my son and I have a weird obsession with learning about prisons, this fabulous new book about Alcatraz was first on our list.
Miles wanted to read it to learn more about Al Capone and he wasn’t disappointed—did you know Capone made $60 million a year at his peak (worth over $830 million today!). He got tons of privileges at his first prison, but Alcatraz was different.
My interest lay more in the details about prison conditions (the Hole and Strip Cell were horrifying solitary confinement options!) and famous escape attempts. For such a slim volume, this new book packs in a TON of information that will satisfy many readers and be a great starting point for others. From interesting pullouts to well-done illustrations to a 4 page color map/pictures, this is a great nonfiction book. Must-buy for all upper elementary, lower middle school kids interested in this topic. I will put this in my middle school library.
