While reading this book, I felt I was watching an episode of Chopped but with middle schoolers as the competitors. This story is wonderfully descriptive about the meals prepared and even includes tiny illustrations of each one. Rae, Oliver, Caroline and Tate bravely make their way through cooking challenges and critical chefs who keep coming up with clever recipes using crazy ingredients. Each child learns in their own way, that while competition is fun, sometimes winning at life is better than on TV.
Our three remaining contestants get ready to carry on in week two of the competitive cooking/reality show. My hands got sweaty just thinking of the pressure these kids have put upon themselves.
I loved the fire challenge in The Heat is On, which was a change from the first book in the series. During this competition, the judges really work everyone’s nerves, although they were a bit less “pushy” than they were in Lights, Camera, Cook! Again, the meals are so descriptive you can almost taste them, and the illustrations add such a cute touch. I was surprised at the elimination choice this time. I did not see that one coming! And now I must wait until July when the next book in the series, The Winner Is is released!
