Many thanks to the author and @kidlitexchange for sharing this middle grade release!

I absolutely loved this book! It’s one of those I will remember for a long time. It’s about homelessness, family, friendship and of course, loving your dog. It offers us a IMG_5686compassionate understanding of how if feels to be homeless; the embarrassment, the shame, the hunger and the lack of freedom to make your own choices. You feel Shannon’s constant fear that her school or her friends will learn that she, her alcoholic aunt and her precious Jack Russell, Boone, are living in their car. You feel her fear that her dog, her last connection to her mom who died of breast cancer, will be taken away from her because he isn’t welcome in a shelter. You feel her hunger as she is served less than desirable food at the shelter. But you also admire her resourcefulness, her courage and her fierce determination to solve her problems.

Just Left of Lucky is one of those stories you wish wouldn’t end. You become so invested in the characters and their lives, you just want to keep reading. But because of those reasons, I flew through the book in a few hours! I highly recommend this book be added to elementary and public libraries. It will be flying off the shelf!
