Noah Webster’s Fighting Words By Tracy Nelson Maurer; Illustrated by Mircea Catusanu
(April 1st 2017 ~ Millbrook Press)

Everyone has heard of Webster’s Dictionary, but very few of us know the story of the man behind the words, Noah Webster. This delightfully funny and educational picture book biography tells the story of how Noah Webster used his love of language to create the first-ever American dictionary.

The dynamic mixed media art practically jumps off the page. The illustrations include collage-style artwork that incorporates excerpts of 18th-century newspapers and some of Noah’s own handwritten letters. This book is as entertaining as it is informative, and is an excellent choice for either a home or classroom library.

I recommend Noah Webster’s Fighting Words for ages 7-11.
