This book presents in a succinct way the lives and accomplishments of Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, and Barack Obama. The best way I can describe it is that it feels like a synopsis of their respective biographies.

I appreciated the candid and factual tone of the narrative. There was no embellishment IMG_5201or dramatization. If there was, then it was done well enough for me to miss it.

Knowing our history is one of the best ways to prevent ourselves from repeating the same mistakes. My generation is reaping the benefits of their fights for human rights and equality even though we have our own challenges to overcome.

I love that a book like this exists to teach, enlighten and hopefully encourage younger generations to continue fighting for social justice in small and perhaps big ways.

And yet ANOTHER review of this title!

This book from the Editors of Time for Kids includes biographies of four American heroes, Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks and Barack Obama. We learn about their families, their childhoods and the paths they followed as they grew into the heroes who we know. This is written in a style that will hold the interest of even those who may be reluctant to choose a biography.

The headings, multiple illustrations with strong captions, the glossary, the index and the timelines of their lives enables the reader to find the information they are looking for quickly and easily, if the book is being used for research. However, with all of the little known facts that are included in this biography, many kids will find themselves reading the entire book! Heroes of Black History needs to be added to every elementary library collection.
