You Go First by Erin Entrada Kelly
(Greenwillow Books ~ April 10th 2018)
Thank you @kidlitexchange for providing me with a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.
Charlotte and Ben live in different states and met in an online Scrabble game. Both have a tough time making friends at school and both are dealing with some serious family issues. Charlotte’s dad is in ICU and Ben’s parents just announced that they are divorcing. Their unique friendship helps them work through some emotions and navigate through the sudden changes. Sometimes you just need that one person who will give you the courage to keep going!
I loved the concept of this story. Charlotte and Ben are wonderful characters with great voices. I think many middle grade kids will easily relate to several of the problems that they are faced with: a sudden change in family dynamic, feelings of guilt, stepping outside of your comfort zone to try something new, saying goodbye to old friendships, being bullied and gaining confidence to just be yourself. I really enjoyed the overall theme of taking the time to nurture relationships and being open to making new friends. I love how both find a local friend in the most unlikely places. ◽️ Told in alternating voices, full of great advice, interesting facts, humilitating situations and self discovery this is a great choice for many!! It’s set to release April 10 so go add it to your list now!! I definitely enjoyed the author’s writing style and will definitely check out her other books.
